Replace the seal on an American Standard Champion 4 flush valve

Champion 4 toilets use a 4-inch flush valve, which American Standard says is the largest in the industry. The "flapper" is a float assembly that rides on a vertical guide rod, sealed by a gasket underneath. When the tank seeps into the bowl, the gasket is usually what has worn.

Which Champion valve do you have?

Find the four-digit tank model number stamped on the back wall inside the tank, near the water level mark. American Standard: a number starting with 2 is a one-piece toilet, starting with 4 is a two-piece. One-piece and two-piece Champions use different flush valves.

American Standard has changed the Champion valve over the years, and the repair depends on the version:

Thumbscrew style
Beaded chain and a black thumbscrew on top of the green flapper. Models 2020 and older.
Lock-ring style
Linked chain, green top and a locking ring under the flapper. Models 2020 and newer.
Maroon top
The current valve assembly. For a leak at the flapper, American Standard says to replace the whole assembly, 7382106-100.0070A, rather than a seal.

Seal kit and cross-references

American Standard's part is the Champion Seal Kit, 7301111-0070A (blister pack 7301111-0070AP), a gasket and an O-ring. American Standard's online store now lists the blister pack as discontinued, so these aftermarket seals are the easier buy:

  • Korky 450 (also 450BP) is made to replace 7301111-0070A and fits a 4-inch opening. Korky lists Champion 4 tanks 2004, 2034, 4266, 4272, 4077, 4281 and 4149A, Champion 4 Max 4215, Champion Pro 4225, and Eljer Titan 4.
  • Fluidmaster 510A-001 is sold for Champion 4 and Eljer Titan 4. Fluidmaster says not to lubricate the sealing surface.
  • Fluidmaster PROS3AELP15 is a three-pack for plumbers, listed for Champion 4, 4 Max and Pro.

If you have replaced the seal more than once and it still leaks, American Standard recommends a complete flush valve and tank-to-bowl kit, which is a tank-off job.

Tools and supplies

Replace the Champion seal

Steps from American Standard's knowledge base for the two seal-kit styles. Check which style you have first.

  1. Close the stop valve behind the toilet and empty the tank

Turn the stop valve on the wall or floor behind the toilet clockwise until it is snug. Flush and hold the handle down to drain the tank, then sponge out the water left in the bottom. If the tank starts refilling, the stop is not holding.

Safety: Do not force a stop valve that will not turn; old stops can break or start leaking at the stem. Use the house main instead.

  2. Unhook the chain

Lock-ring style: unhook the chain clip from the trip lever rod. Thumbscrew style: remove the hair pin cotter and clevis pin that hold the chain to the lever arm.

  3. Lock-ring style: take off the flapper and lock

Lift the flapper assembly, hold the guide rod below it, and turn the flapper counterclockwise to remove it. Turn the lower locking ring counterclockwise and pull it off with the old seal.

  4. Thumbscrew style: unthread the thumbscrew

Cradle the green flapper and turn the black thumbscrew counterclockwise. American Standard warns it can be difficult: cover it with a cloth so you can use more force without breaking it. Remove the flapper top and the seal. Replace the O-ring on the thumbscrew while it is off.

  5. Fit the new seal

Place the new seal on the flapper body. Lock-ring style: align the lock with its tabs and twist clockwise until it locks, and make sure it is fully locked before you continue. Thumbscrew style: refit the flapper top and turn the thumbscrew until you feel the detent.

  6. Refit the flapper and chain

Lock-ring style: thread the flapper assembly back onto the guide rod clockwise until it seats; Korky's 450 instructions describe two clicks. Reattach the chain, and replace the refill clip with the new one if your kit includes it.

  7. Set the chain

American Standard: the chain is right when the valve opens the instant you push the handle and closes the moment you let go. It should be taut with no slack but long enough for the valve to seal completely.

  8. Turn the water on and test overnight

Open the stop, flush a few times and check for drips. American Standard's leak test: shut the water off and leave the toilet overnight. If the level drops to the flapper, the seal is leaking; below the flapper, the flush valve itself is; no change means the fill valve is the cause of any running.

Stop and call a plumber if

  • The stop valve behind the toilet will not close, or it drips at the stem or the nut once you have moved it.
  • The supply line is corroded, kinked, bulging, or a braided line shows broken strands. Fluidmaster's own sheets say to replace a supply connector that is worn or over five years old.
  • Water is on the floor around the base of the toilet, or the floor near it feels soft. That points to the wax ring or flange, which means pulling the toilet.
  • Water drips from the tank bolts or between the tank and bowl. Fixing that, or replacing the whole flush valve, means taking the tank off the bowl.
  • You see a crack in the tank or bowl porcelain, even a hairline one.
  • The flush valve seat itself is chipped or pitted and a new flapper still leaks.
